MKCG Medical College, Berhmapur launches first Tele-Ophthalmology unit in State

More focus on eye care

First tele-ophthalmology unit in the State has been started by MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur city. Speaking to The Hindu , B. Nageswar Subudhi, Head of the Department (HOD) of Ophthalmology Department, said the tele-ophthalmology unit of the college was set up with a financial assistance of Rs. 60 lakh by the Central government under the National Programme for Control of Blindness.

The tele-ophthalmology project has a mobile unit and it would reach out to Primary Health Centres (PHC) in rural areas as well as villages without any medical centres to provide eye care at the door step of the poor and needy. The mobile unit would have direct communication link with headquarters of tele-ophthalmology project where a super specialist would be present to assist the ophthalmologic team in the mobile unit.

The mobile unit was equipped with modern instruments, said Dr. Subudhi. The data of tests of patients would be recorded digitally and the physicians in the mobile unit would take up remedial measures in consultation with headquarters of the tele-ophthalmology project. There would be online transmission of data collected from spot to the headquarters of the project.

During its visits to rural areas, the mobile unit would have one faculty member of Ophthalmology Department of MKCG Medical College and Hospital. He would be assisted by two post-graduate students of the department as well as a technician, said Dr. Subudhi.

Eye donation

It may be noted that Ophthalmology Department of MKCG Medical College and Hospital has been successful in promoting eye donation with the help of local philanthropists.

It is also hoped that direct interaction of ophthalmologists with common mass in rural areas would also increase awareness about eye care and would also make people think about eye donation after death. Source: The Hindu

MKCG Golden Jubilee: Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik announces Rs. 161 core package and to raise intake capacity for MBBS from 150 to 250

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday announced Rs. 161 core package for  development of MKCG Medical College in Berhampur. He said this while inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the MKCG Medical College. On this occasion he also announced that the State government has started efforts to increase MBBS student intake capacity of Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) medical college in the city by another 100 students and to raise it to 250 from the 2014-15 academic session. At present this only government medical college in south Odisha has intake strength of 150 students for its MBBS course. Naveen said around Rs 161-crore has been sanctioned for construction of new buildings at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. A separate amount has been allotted for the MRI and Life Care Centre at the hospital, he added.

Inauguration ceremony of golden jubilee celebration of this medical college was also attended by Berhampur MP, S. Mohapatra, MLAs R.C.C. Patnaik, Pradeep Panigrahy and Purna Chandra Sethi, RDC (southern division) Aravind Padhi, director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, R.M.Tripthy etc. Attraction of the inaugural function was Sukumar Das, the first principal of this medical college who attended the function at the advanced age of 89 years. Prof. Das narrated the story of establishment of the medical college in 1962 at the function. He urged the Chief Minister to initiate measures to eradicate lacking of this institute and take developmental measures to make it a major institution of medical sciences in the country.

Department for Rehabilitation Medicine to be opened in MKCG Medical college

BERHAMPUR: With focus on prevention of disability, the Government is developing and upgrading trauma care and rehabilitation medicine infrastructure in the State. A Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur would be opened soon and such facility extended to other hospitals of the State, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said at the IOA annual conference. Inaugurating the 54th annual conference of the Indian Orthopaedic Association, the Chief Minister admitted that lack of effective healthcare delivery is a major area of concern in Orissa. There is an urgent need to make use of medical advancements and upgrade infrastructure and manpower to combat disease.

Odisha Chief Secretary visits MKCG medical college

BERHAMPUR: State Chief Secretary Tarun Kanti Mishra visited the city on November 06. He went to the Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) centre on MKCG Medical College campus to enquire about the functioning of the CD-4 machine at the centre.
The CD-4 machine at the ART centre has remained unused since August due to software problem and lack of trained technician. Mr. Mishra also visited the centralised kitchen of the Nandi foundation which is providing mid-day meal to schools in several blocks of Ganajm district.
