Pre-Mauryan Era Structure Found During Excavation at #Jaugada in Ganjam District of Odisha.

Jaugada ("Jaugarh", ancient Samapa]) is a ruined fortress in the Ganjam district in OdishaIndia. It ancient name was Samapa or Sampa. It was the capital city of the mighty Kalinga emperors from the Ramayana era till Kalinga WarJaugada lies 35 km north-west of Berhampur City and 160 km south-west of Bhubaneshwar. After the defeat in Kalinga War it was the provincial Mauryan fortified capital of  the Kalinga, Jaugada is famed by its version of the monumental stone-cut edicts in Prakrit of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka.
Despite J.D. Beglar's description during the later 19th century of the extant fortification towers and moat ("The walls had towers, also of earth, at each of the four corners, and also on each flank of each of the eight entrances"), without photos and drawings, the remains are difficult to visualize and comprehend. In 1956 Debala Mitra of the Archaeological Survey of India transected the northern glacis with a trench.
The now collapsed trench of this investigation appears to lie just east of the eastern gate of the north wall. It is near the great Shiva temple Kaleswar & Rameswar (which is known as a temple where Shiva and Vishnu are seen together).
This site was first documented in 2001 by a team from the University of Heidelberg.

Brahmapur-Sambalpur Railway line work in Odisha put on track

The much-awaited Brahmapur-Sambalpur railway line is likely to see the light of the day as the Railway Board has given green signal for its Preliminary Engineering-cum-Traffic Survey (PETS) recently.
Odisha Rail Infrastructure Development Limited (ORIDL), a joint venture of the State Government and the Ministry of Railways, has floated tender seeking potential bidders to conduct the survey and submit a detailed project report (DPR) within eight months.
Land acquisition process for the railway line would begin after the approval of the DPR by the Railway Board. If everything goes as per plan, the railway line would be laid within three years, sources said. The proposed 240-km railway line will connect four parliamentary constituencies of Brahmapur, Aska, Kandhamal and Sambalpur.
It will pass through Jagannathpur, Kukudakhandi, Hinjili, Aska, Khandarabali, Basudevpur, Bhanjanagar, Mujagada, Bodangi, Chakapada, Jhagarpata, Phulbani, Lakarhapaju, Sunamundi, Mundapada, Boudh, Kadaligada and Rairakhol crossing five tunnels, 38 major bridges and 184 minor bridges.
The route will have 18 railway stations. Kandhamal, which is located between Ganjam and Sambalpur districts, does not have railway connectivity and this has hampered development.
The Centre had accorded permission to the East Coast Railway (ECoR) to conduct a baseline survey for laying the railway line in 2010-11. Though ECoR had submitted a 212-page survey report to the Ministry of Railways, the project is yet to take off.
The inordinate delay had triggered widespread public resentment across south and western Odisha.
RTI activist and advocate B Sankar Patra said people, especially those residing in rural areas, would get cheaper and viable mode of transport if the project is implemented. The railway line will help in speeding up development process in the backward regions of these districts.

PIL filed for extension of Rajdhani, Sampark Kranti Express from Bhubaneswar to Brahmapur and Lokamanya Tilak from Visakhapatnam to Brahmapur

A PIL filed in the Odisha High Court, seeking a direction to the authorities for extension of routes of some express trains up to Brahmapur Station from Bhubaneswar, stoppage of some long route express trains at Brahmapur and running of some new trains from Brahmapur.
The Bharatiya Vikash Parishad represented by its State president Surendra Kumar Panigrahi filed Parishad requested for extension of the Rajdhani Express and the Sampark Kranti Express from Bhubaneswar to Brahmapur and extension of the Lokamanya Tilak Express from Visakhapatnam to Brahmapur; stoppage of Howarah-Pondichery Weekly Express (HWH-PDY) train at Brahmapur and introduction of a new daily fast passenger train exclusively from Brahmapur to Puri and the vice- versa.
Similarly, the petitioner also prayed for introduction of a new train between Brahmapur and Surat, for more than five lakh Odias from Ganjam alone are living in Surat and 90 per cent of the passengers of the Puri-Ahmedabad Express train board at the Brahmapur station but many didn't get seat for huge rush.
Similarly, lakhs of Odia labourers from Ganjam are working in Mumbai and except the Konark Express which is unable to meet the rush, there is no second train between Brahmapur and Mumbai, the petitioner added.
Justifying the extension of two super-fast express trains, namely, the Rajadhani Express and the Sampark Kranti Express from Bhubaneswar to Brahmapur, the petitioner cited that the extension of the trains should be considered in the same spirit like, the Chatishgarah Rajadhani Express running from Bilaspur to New Delhi via Raipur and so also, the Chatishgarah Samaprka Kranti Express which is running from Durg to New Delhi via Raipur.
The Secretary to Government, Ministry of Railways, Chairman of Railway Bhavan, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Transport, Government of Odisha, General Manager of East Coast Railway, Bhubaneswar and Divisional Manager, Khurda Railway Station were made opposite parties by the petitioner.
