Berhampur Mayor plans to multiply tax revenue

BERHAMPUR: Berhampur Municipal Corporation Mayor S S Das on Thursday, warned the concerned tax collectors of the corporation to collect the tax four times. During the official review meeting on revenue generation and collection Mayor Dash said “collect tax more than your salary or you will loose the job”. The official review meeting of the municipal corporation was held here in the city on Thursday where all the details regarding the tax collection and revenue generation were discussed in the meeting in which the tax collectors and the elected representatives were present. Mayor Dash was not satisfied on the amount of tax being collected at present as the tax collectors were depositing the tax collection amount which is less than the salary of tax collectors. As a result of which he warned that the tax collectors should collect the tax including house holdings, commercial taxes etc, more than the amount of their salaries. In some cases, they have to collect the tax more than four times. The revenue and the tax collection should be more than 12 crores, otherwise the corporation might be at the losing end, warned Mayor Dash. Mayor Dash further said that few tax collectors collect tax from the people and do not deposit it at the corporation office.

  1. Dear Tripathybabu,

I have come across your blog only to-day. Your efforts in starting the blog on Berhampur are commendable.

While appreciating the sincerity and seriousness of our Mayor to improve the conditions of the City, I would like to share my views in this regard.

Traffic, Roads, Drains in the City need urgent attention. Taxes to be revised upwards and collected without any let up. The problems are numerous and it is next to impossible to set right everything. I think as a beginning, the stray animals in the City like cows, bulls, dogs etc., should be removed. This will ease traffic congestion to a certain extent, besides making the job of cleaning staff as bit less difficult. Secondly, the cart vendors to be regulated. Third, it is common for us to find that those who are undertaking construction activity freely encroach upon roads for stacking up building materials. This should be restricted by heavily penalising them. Traffic regulation is very poor in the City. The authorities, besides improving traffic conditions, can increase the income to exchequer by imposing stiff penalties on those who violate traffic rules.
I appeal to our Mayor Sri S S Das and all the concerned to consider the above suggestions.
I think the above measure will bring about some immediate improvement.

    Balaji Ramana
