Gopalpur port (Berhampur) resumes operation



More than two years after it was hit by cyclones, Gopalpur Port, Berhampur in Ganjam district of Odisha has resumed operations. Located between Paradip and Visakhapatnam, the port welcomed its maiden shipment after re-commissioning, which was inaugurated by Odisha’s Commerce and Transport Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi yesterday. 
Gopalpur Port, BERHAMPUR (2)The port had commenced its commercial operations and trial shipments during April 2013 but the infrastructure was devastated due to cyclone Phailin in October that year followed by cyclone Hudhud in 2014, a port release said.
Gopalpur Port is one of the most environment-friendly ports in the region and is developed on a four km stretch of coast line and is well connected by road and rail. Gopalpur Port has adequate stack yard space for storage of bulk and break bulk cargo and it is planned with provision for upgradation as per the traffic growth.
Besides the open stack yards, there are 15 covered sheds with a total area of 12,000 sq.m for storage of break bulk cargoes, it said. Gopalpur port will serve the factories and the mineral rich hinterlands of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. The port facilities are being developed to provide the lowest cost and most efficient option for users in this area. The port is being developed in three phases, the release said.
