Apart from other things Brahmapur is also famous for a unique Sweet i.e. ଧନୁ ମୁଆଁ / धनु मुआँ / Dhanu Muaan or Puffed Rice Cake.

Its a seasonal delicacy and generally available from Dhanu Sankranti to Makar Sankranti, i.e. December to January of English Calendar. 

As per the tradition, the cake is offered to the Ista Devi and Ista Deva of every house in Ganjam District on the occasion of Dhanu Sankranti. Even there is a local custom of giving Muaan or Dhanu Muaan to the married women and her in-laws during this month.

It is a major offering for puja in famous temples like Tara Tarini Shakti Peetha and Brahmapur Ista Devi Budhi Thakurani.

Inoperative Super Speciality Block Compromising Health Care facility in MKCG Hospital, Berhampur

One year on since inauguration, the two super specialty blocks at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur is yet to see the light of the day.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had inaugurated the specialty blocks last year. Some crucial departments like heart surgery, plastic surgery, geriatric and nephrology operating inside indoor patient department (IPD)of the hospital were scheduled to be shifted to the new blocks as the old building was declared unfit in 2013.

Dean of MKCG Hospital, Professor Radhamadhab Tripathy said that steps have already been taken to make the building functional within ten days. “We had apprised the government about the development and the concerned authorities have already started the process of recruiting super specialty doctors. The building will start functioning within seven to ten days and the shifting of departments will be completed by December end,” Tripathy said.

Security of Berhampur Circle Jail under question mark ?

Security of Berhampur Circle Jail now under question mark? As Berhampur Circle Jail is a home to some of the most hardcore criminals including Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda, the prison is considered very sensitive place. A day after security breach allegations were leveled against Balasore jail , questions have been raised over the security of the Circle Jail in Berhampur for delay in appointment of jail superintendent and staff crunch.

As Berhampur Circle Jail is a home to some of the most hardcore criminals including Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda, the prison is considered very sensitive place. Besides, around 24 jails of the nearby southern districts like Gajapati, Kandhamal also come under the jurisdiction of this circle jail.

Berhampur being one of the most crime-affected cities in the southern region of the State, the weakened security arrangements at the jail have now been a major concern for all.

As per reports, the Circle Jail is yet to get a new in-charge after the retirement of the last superintendent two months ago. Even after repeated exposure on staff crunch hitting the jail, around 16 warder posts are lying vacant in the jail while four officers are working in place of ten.

While the outer security of the jail is ensured by armed API constables, the internal security is more of a concern due to absence of sufficient number of staff.

Lawyer Pitabas Panda said, “A senior superintendent should be posted as in-charge of the Circle jail but it is quite shocking to note that the government is not at all concerned to fill the vacant post. Not only that, the number of prisoners is triple the strength of the security personnel here.”

DIG Prisons, Southern Range Raghunath Majhi also accepted that the fulfilment of superintendent post has become extremely important. Earlier on Monday, a video of the husband of Nilgiri Sub-Jail superintendent Mamtabala Patra, working in the computer inside the jail premises had gone viral on social media drawing criticism from various sectors.

Cancer is no longer a dreaded disease: Manisha Koirala

Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala on 02 December flagged off the Cancer Awareness Cycle Rally from the premises of Gopalpur Army College in Berhampur.

Manisha, who was the chief guest at the programme organised by the Grameen Sneha Foundation, said, “Cancer is no longer a dreaded disease. 

Head of the National Cancer Institute, AIIMS, New Delhi, Prof G K Rath also attended the event. He said there has already been a vaccine to check different kinds of cancers among women.

Brigadier R Srivastav and major P S Bhatia of Army AD College, director, Acharya Harihar Cancer research Centre Dr L Sarangi were also present at the event.

The rally will culminate at Pune in Maharashtra December 25 after covering a distance of 1,481 km in 24 days touching 14 districts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The Foundation sources said the rally is first of its kind in the state.

Fate of NH-16 expansion near Berhampur city hangs in balance

Uncertainty looms large over six-laning of 56 km stretch of National Highway (NH)-16 (old NH-5) after 41-km Puintola-Girisola section along Andhra-Odisha border was transferred from jurisdiction of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Bhubaneswar division to Visakhapatnam division recently.

Earlier, the stretch, passing through Ganjam district from Girisola to Narayani Chowk, was under NHAI, Bhubaneswar division. Two years back, the district administration had submitted a proposal to NHAI, Bhubaneswar for expansion of the stretch into six lane, construction of service roads and flyovers at seven places. Later, the NHAI authorities conducted a survey and submitted the detailed project report (DPR) to the Central Government for its approval.

But last week, the Central Government transferred the 41-km stretch from Puintola Chowk to Girisola to Visakhapatnam division while the rest 15-km patch from Puintola Chowk to Narayani Chowk remained under NHAI, Bhubaneswar division.

Meanwhile, Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange urged the NHAI authorities to start construction work on three flyovers at Humma, Randha and DRDA Chowk. 

On the other hand, leaders of all political parties in the district have reacted sharply to the decision. BJD leader and Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) chairman Subash Moharana described it as unjustified and said it reveals step-motherly attitude of the Central Government towards Odisha. 

Ganjam Congress working president Pitabasa Panda demanded that the stretch should be under the jurisdiction of NHAI, Bhubaneswar division for better monitoring of construction work. CPM Odisha unit secretary Ali Kishor Patnaik also echoed similar views.

Ganjam BJP unit president Kanhu Charan Pati said they have appealed to the Central Government to take up the expansion work immediately and withdraw the decision of transferring the 41-km stretch to Visakhapatnam division.

Janibili water supply project for Berhampur city once again misses deadline

The commissioning of the Rs 488 crore Janibili mega water supply project here has missed the deadline despite persistent efforts by Ganjam district administration. The Public Health and Engineering Organisation (PHEO) had set a deadline to bring water through 58 km long underground pipes from Janibili reservoir in Soroda to Berhampur by October and formally implement the project by November to tackle the crisis of drinking water here. 

After Dakhinpur reservoir in 1905 and Rushikulya joint water supply project at Madhapur in 1980, Berhampur got third water supply project at Janibili in 2013 when Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid its foundation stone. Tender was floated in 2016 and the construction work was entrusted to Chennai-based M/s Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Though the company had targeted to complete the work by November 2018, it failed to meet the deadline due to several reasons including delay in road excavation permission from NHAI and land acquisition.

The project includes construction of intake well at Janibili, laying of 58-km pipeline from Janibili to Berhampur and a water treatment plant at Jagadalpur. L&T, which is executing the project, has already laid nearly 54 km. Laying of four km pipeline is yet to be completed due to land dispute. Though a division office was set up with an estimated cost of `80 crore from Odisha Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (OUIDF) to monitor the work in 2013, it failed to ensure timely completion of the project.

Apart from 58-km stretch, the L&T will also lay pipeline of 235 km in the Silk City to supply water to the households. But so far pipelines have been laid on only 170 km stretch. While 70 per cent work on the intake well has been completed, over bridge construction is yet to be started. Similarly, construction of treatment plant is lagging behind.

Recently, the Chief Minister expressed his displeasure over the issue and directed the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department to take up the matter with the L&T for timely construction of the project and supply water to Berhampur by January 2019.

Odisha Govt shifting Berhampur University ‘Deer Park’ to Parlakhemundi

The deer park in the premises of Berhampur University is all set to be shifted to Parlakhemundi by December this year. “The process of relocation of the total antelope population from the deer park to Parlakhemundi will begin soon,” informed Berhmapur Forest Division DFO Asish Behera.

“There is a lack of animal shifting van, thus we are facing problem to relocate the herbivores,” he added. “We have received information that the State government has purchased two veterinary vans which is expected to be brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar by December first or second week. Once the vehicles reach Nandankanan, we will start relocating the animals from the deer park to Parlakhemundi,” he further added.

It is worthy mentionable that the deer park was set up in 1991 for beautification of the varsity and research by veterinarians. Under the supervision of then administrator Professor C.C. Dash, two deers were brought from the deer park at Raj Bhawan in the state capital and the animals were released in the newly-constructed park on 2.02 acre land in the varsity.

However, in the year 2010, Central Zoo Authority of India directed shifting of all mini zoos in the premises of education institutions. Following which the decision was taken by the University authorities to shift the deer park elsewhere. The varsity also issued a letter to forest department in this matter.

The deer population in the park has now risen to 50. The University’s veterinary department is shouldering the responsibility of the deer park maintenance and is taking good care of the animals.

Homecoming for Berhampur University alumni and Belagaon (Brahmapur) born famous NASA scientist who weighed mass of star previous year.

Almost a year after measuring the mass of a star, Ganjam born astronomer Kailash Sahu is back in his home town in Belagaon on the outskirts of Brahmapur city in Ganjam district. The scientist working at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI) of NASA is now spending bulk of his time at his village interacting with people and school students.

Sahu achieved the fete by employing Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, something which the German physicist longed to do but found to be impossible during his lifetime.

Recalling his childhood memories, Sahu said that his village did not have electricity and it was tough times then. After completing his higher education from Berhampur University in 1977, he then went to IIT Kharagpur and then to other prominent universities abroad and eventually became NASA scientist in new space discovery.

Sahu is known as Planet Hunter in the astronomy fraternity since he has discovered 16 new planets in 2006. Moreover, he became a much talked about personality after he calculated the mass of dwarf star Stein 2051B, the sixth-nearest white dwarf star to Sun. “Basing on the sun’s mass, we calculated the mass of the star which was two-thirds of the mass of the sun,” said Sahu.

While interacting with the students in his school, Sahu is spending time showing demos about his achievements and encouraging them to dream big and work hard in life. Not only students, friends and other villagers expressed their happiness over Sahu’s return to the village. “We are really proud of Kailash as he has brought laurels for the village, state and the entire country,” said Subhash Chandra Sahu his brother.

The Manav Adhikar Surakhya Manch’s Ghanta Yatra (cymbal rally) demanding a permanent solution to different problems of the MKCG Medical College Hospital entered its 69th phase here on 21 Nov. The Manch submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik demanding functioning of the super-specialty department and shelving the Public Private Partnership (PPP) project in the hospital.

The members said that the 300-bedded super-specialty department, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 56 crore, is turning to be a haunted house.

"BERHAMPUR CITY GETS SMARTER"

Berhampur is 1st city in Odisha which installed Underground Waste Bins with sensors

Launching a first of its kind initiative to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a clean India, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC)has installed the underground garbage bin facility fitted with sensors.

With this, the city has become the first Municipal Corporation in the State to have a smart underground bin system. The project kicked-off after inauguration by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

BeMC Commissioner Chakraborty Singh Rathore said, “The waste bins have been fitted with sensors that will send alerts to control room as soon as they get filled. We have dashboards that signal green, yellow and red based on the level of garbage in the dustbins. The bins will signal green if the waste level is below 40 per cent; waste up to 70 per cent level will signal yellow and the moment the waste reaches 80 per cent, it will signal red in the dashboard and we will send cranes to empty the bins.”

“This is a complete sensor-based technology. So there will be no problem in the maintenance of the entire system,” assured Rathore.
