Lakhs flock to Tara Tarini temple in Berhampur for Chaitra Mela

Lakhs of devotees from far off places of Odisha and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh thronged the Tara Tarini temple, one of the famous Shakti shrines, located on the bank of the Rushikulya river near Berhampur city on the occasion of the Chaitra Mela which began from today.
Braving the scorching sun, thousands climb 999 steps to reach the 17th century temple, located about 709 feet above the sea level to tonsure their babies and offer hairs to the Goddess every Tuesday of the month.
Around 700 police personnel, including 8 platoons of police forces, three additional SP (Ganjam), one DSP, ten inspector rank officers were camping in the temple premises for traffic management and to look into the law and order problem, said SP (Ganjam) Ashish Singh.
A firm from Andhra Pradesh collected the hair from the temple. The company has offered around Rs 2.25 lakh this time to collect all hair from here. Last year, the same company had offered Rs 2.60-lakh, temple sources said.
"The district administration and the temple administration have made elaborate arrangements for the convenience of the visitors," said Pramod Kumar Panda, secretary, Tara Tarini Development Board.

Tata Steel hardsells Gopalpur SEZ in Odisha

Tata Steel is in discussion with foreign companies for investments up to Rs 20,000 crore in heavy industries over the next five years at its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project at Gopalpur in Odisha.
"We believe we should be able to get foreign investment between Rs 15,000 crore and Rs 20,000 crore over the next five years at the Gopalpur SEZ," Tata Steel SEZ managing director Arun Misra told PTI last night.
"We are in discussions with 13 to 14 different investors. Talks are at various levels," he said at the Emerging India Forum 2016 in Singapore.
The investment will be in defence, metal downstream and electronics as well as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, Misra, who is marketing the Gopalpur SEZ as a gateway to the South East Asian markets, said.
Tata Steel is the anchor tenant for the multi-product 2,970-acre SEZ at Gopalpur in Odisha. The UK-based Midget Corporations is setting up an assembly plant for "unmanned aerial vehicle targets" which are used by army for firing practice.
Singapore consultant Subrana Jurong has completed the SEZ's masterplan with all land cleared for leasing within the 30-square-km boundary.
"All master-planning has been done, the entire area has been cleared, there is no encumbrance," Misra said.
Basic utilities and road infrastructure has already been built in early development of the zone which has Tata Steel's ferrochrome plant.
The Gopalpur SEZ, just off the National Highway 5, will be based on a Singapore model for industrial development which offers land parcels of various sizes for industries, he said.
Tata Steel SEZ will invest between Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore by 2020 in the Gopalpur SEZ, for which a Tata Power plant proposal is also on the drawing board.
The company is also discussing a possible investment in expansion of Gopalpur port, about 5 km away from the zone.
"We want to show that if you plan well and provide infrastructure, SEZ can be successful," Misra said.
Good days ahead
The steel industry is likely to see good days ahead as the "worst is behind us", Tata Steel India managing director T.V. Narendran has said.
"The worst is behind us," Narendran recently said on the sidelines of a conference in Calcutta.
Referring to steel prices, Narendran said he did not wish to predict their range for the next few months, but said the domestic steel price was still lower than the minimum import price (MIP) imposed by the government in February.
In the recent past, domestic price was up by Rs 3,000 and international steel prices had also moved up by 15 per cent, he said.
Rural focus in the budget and the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations will fuel domestic demand, he said.
Narendran said domestic steel makers were following the developments in China.
Speaking about Tata Steel Kalinganagar, he said the company was focussing on stabilising the first phase of three million tonnes capacity. Depending on cash flows and current demand, plan for additional three million tonnes in the second phase will be carried out.

Tata Steel is in discussion with foreign companies for investments up to Rs 20,000 crore in heavy industries over the next five years at its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project at Gopalpur in Odisha.

ISRO-Built Doppler Radar To Be Commissioned In Odisha's Gopalpur

Gopalpur, which bore the brunt of severe cyclonic storm Phailin, is all set to get a doppler radar to boost the weather forecasting system on cyclone-prone east coast.
The radar, indigenously built by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), is expected to be operational by next month.
In November last year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had also installed a doppler radar in Paradip, another coastal district in Odisha which was ravaged by a super cyclone in 1999.
"The Odisha government has given land and also constructed building for the project free of cost," said Devendra Pradhan, Deputy Director General of IMD.
He said the government intends to cover the entire eastern and western coast with doppler radars for improved weather forecast.
"Doppler radar is an observational tool for monitoring and predicting severe weather events within the radius of 300 kms such as thunder storms, hailstorm, cyclones and tornadoes. It not only gives information about precipitation, but also wind velocity," Pradhan said.
After Maharashtra government and the Centre came under fire over the handling of the 2005 deluge in Mumbai, the IMD expedited the process of setting up doppler radars.
On the eastern coast, the IMD has installed doppler radars in Chennai, Kolkata, Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam. Paradip and Gopalpur are new additions. The move assumes significance as the eastern coast is prone to cyclones and better forecast will help the authorities in taking timely action.
Kochi, Bhuj, Mumbai and Karikal on the western coast already have doppler radars, while the equipment is being set up in Goa. Negotiations are on with the ISRO to install another doppler radar in Trivandrum.
